Title Tag Length: How Long Should It Be?
Google has no fixed title limit but cuts long titles to fit the screen. See the practical length to aim for, pixels vs characters, and examples.

Google has no fixed limit on title tag length, but it truncates long titles in search results to fit the device width, so a practical target is about 50 to 60 characters, or roughly 580 pixels. Keep the most important words at the start of the title so they survive if the end is cut off.
What Google says
Google’s documentation says there is no limit on how long a <title> element can be, but the title link in search results is truncated as needed, typically to fit the device width. It also says titles shown in search are generated automatically from the page’s content and from references to it on the web, so the title Google displays may differ from yours.
That means length is about display, not about a penalty. A long title is not a violation. It just risks being cut off, and a title that gets cut off may lose the words that earn the click.
Characters vs pixels
Truncation depends on width, not on a character count. Wide letters such as W and M take more room than narrow ones such as i and l, so a title of 55 characters can fit while another of 55 gets cut.
A useful working rule:
- Characters: aim for about 30 to 60.
- Width: keep it under roughly 580 pixels on desktop.
These are guidelines. Google does not publish exact numbers and the cutoff varies by device and query, so treat them as a safe zone rather than a rule.
The Page Audit Checker shows each page’s title length in characters and an estimated width in pixels, so you can spot titles that are too long or too short across a whole site. The pixel width is an estimate based on Arial, not a measurement of what Google renders.
Examples
| Title | Characters | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
Home | SeckRates | 16 | Too short and vague. It says nothing about the page. |
Technical SEO Services in Pagadian City | SeckRates | 51 | Good. Specific, keyword first, brand last. |
Free Alt Text Checker: Find Missing Alt Tags | SeckRates | 56 | Good. Describes the page and fits. |
SeckRates - The Best Technical SEO Services, SEO Audits, Schema Markup, Core Web Vitals and Mobile SEO for Real Estate Websites | 127 | Too long, stuffed with terms. The end would be cut off. |
How to write a good title
- Put the main topic first. Start with what the page is about, in natural words.
- Make it specific. “Technical SEO Services in Pagadian City” beats “Services”.
- Add the brand at the end, if there is room.
- Make every title unique. Duplicate titles make pages harder to tell apart.
- Write it for people. It is the headline of your result. Say what the visitor will get.
- Avoid stuffing. A list of keywords reads badly and invites Google to rewrite it.
When Google rewrites your title
Google may replace your title with its own version. According to its documentation, common triggers include titles that are half-empty or just boilerplate, titles stuffed with repeated keywords, titles that do not describe the page, and titles that are much too long. Sometimes it picks a different title because it fits the query better. If your titles keep being rewritten, check them for these problems first.
Title length and rankings
Length does not directly help or hurt rankings. What matters is that the title is accurate, descriptive and unique, because that helps search engines understand the page and helps searchers choose it. Do not pad a title to reach a certain length, and do not cut a good one just to hit a number.
How to check your titles
- Crawl your site with the Page Audit Checker.
- Use the Title Issues filter to see missing, duplicate, short and long titles.
- Export the CSV and sort by length to find the extremes.
- Rewrite the worst ones first: missing titles, duplicates, and key pages.

Frequently asked questions
What is the ideal title tag length?
Roughly 50 to 60 characters, or about 580 pixels. Google has no fixed limit, but longer titles are more likely to be cut off in results.
Does Google use pixels or characters for title length?
Truncation is based on display width, so pixels are the more accurate measure. Characters are a handy approximation.
What happens if my title is too long?
Google may truncate it with an ellipsis or rewrite it. You lose control of how it appears, and the words at the end may not be seen.
Is a short title bad?
A very short title, such as “Home”, wastes the chance to describe the page. Use the space to be specific, but do not pad.
Should the title match the H1?
They can be similar, but they do not have to be identical. The H1 is the heading on the page, while the title is the headline in search results and the browser tab.
Does the brand name need to be in the title?
Not necessarily. It helps recognition, so many sites add it at the end, but drop it if it pushes the main topic out of the safe zone.
